It is a paradox. I met this woman before church began. Her tent is behind her. Her 1 year old son named Joseph cannot stand on his legs. They are too thin and weak. But that isn't the only sadness in her life. Only 10 days ago, during a major typhoon in Manila, she lost her 5 week old baby. But here she was at church, finding fellowship, belonging and freedom to worship the Lord. We sang the same worship songs in our large, air-conditioned church that these joyful folks sang at their church made of bamboo slats, tarp roof, cement floors and make-shift wood benches.
Here I Am to Worship
Tim Hughes
Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness
Opened my eyes let me see
Beauty that made this heart adore You
Hope of a life spent with You
Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me
King of all days
Oh so highly exalted
Glorious in Heaven above
Humbly You came to the earth You created
All for love's sake became poor
I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
On our way home from this church of extremely poor believers, Dave Majam had a CD playing. The Christmas song "Joy to the World the Lord has come" was sung by a choir. It was beautiful. These people can sing for joy, sing that nothing but Jesus satisfies, sing about how glimpses of God's glory satisfies and there is nothing they desire but the love of God. Powerful.
Once again I am very challenged by the Filipino workers who so faithfully work in these areas. People like Pastora Esmerelda, a very short woman who leads 2 churches. People may say a church should not be led by a woman. But I ask... where are the men? Only one shy man stood when they asked who in the congregation was a father.
I am overwhelmed again at the awesome privilege it is for me to experience such worship in the midst of such suffering. The needs are so great. What a privilege to have a small part in making a difference in this country. What a strange paradox I feel today. Joy and heaviness. God is good.
This morning gave me renewed motivation and an overwhelming excitement for my ministry of assisting new missionary candidates to come to the Philippines or be sent out to other countries. What a privileged life we have. You have to experience it to understand what I am saying.
